Review on the 21st GISFF International Competition Awardees

WHAT REMAINS

A heartbreaking portrayal of an elderly man in a predicament. For his first narrative short, Daniel Soares impresses with his simplicity, with every shot drawing you closer to his protagonist. The contrast of modern and obsolescence is well designed throughout the film, that amplifies the loneliness, loss, and helplessness of the man.

SAFE AS HOUSES

An encounter between a woman with Down syndrome and a girl, a victim of family violence. It depicts the friendship and solidarity of the two through everyday perspective, not sympathy or impression. The Director, Mia MULLARKEY sensitively captured the shape of the two who have not yet adapted themselves to the world. The little but shining time of the two portrayed in SAFE AS HOUSES is beautiful and sad.

SUMMER GUEST

SUMMER GUEST is a story that lets the audiences observe the rift in the heart of Jungwon,, a Christian, who gave her time to take care of Mungyeong, a girl in a lot of trouble. The actresses act in everyday life naturally. The mise-en-scène of the film do not force audiences’ emotions, keeping a moderate distance from the audiences. Mungyeong and Jungwon were not on the same page in the summer and their moods of the season were represented on the screen through subtle changes revealed in spaces in everyday life. Misunderstandings in miscommunication and a mistaken assumption are not easily resolved.
